THIS IS MY BODY…

Mixed Media – Plaster-Impregnated Gauze, Dark Cliffs, Gravity
San Simeon, CA

“And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.”
Luke 22:19

AKA Falling 1.2. While the ritual is a relatively literal visual representation of the fall, the piece creates an opportunity to gain insight into how one responds to trauma – both physically and psychologically – and the deeply engrained words and beliefs that we are taught as children .

The artist’s body is cast piece-by-piece from white plaster-impregnated gauze in order to create a representation or shell of self. As the pieces are pulled away, the artist unpeels herself – revealing a new version beneath. The white plaster outer shell is offered back to nature from the top of the dark cliff. Gravity takes hold and places the shell at the water’s lapping edge so that it may return to the sea. The reincarnated self is left standing above – to remember and honor the old self, as well as those who sacrificed either accidentally or intentionally to inspire the metamorphosis.
