SEDGWICK RANCH HOUSE RENOVATION
Part of the University of California Santa Barbara’s Nature Reserve System [NRS], Sedgwick Reserve, which was once known as Rancho La Laguna and owned by Alice Delano de Forest and her husband and sculptor Francis Minturn “Duke” Sedgwick, is now a world-class research, conservation and education facility consisting of nine square miles rich in natural resources including two complete water sheds.
In 2016/17 the NRS, with the generous support of private donors, embarked upon an effort to restore and renovate the original ranch home on the reserve so that it might better support stays by visiting researchers. Kelly Sutherlin McLeod, Architect was retained to oversee the historic preservation of the home, while meeting programmatic needs and ensuring compliance with ADA and energy conservation standards.
This project was part of several concurrent projects underway on the reserve at the time of construction. Significant management and communication with the NRS ensured successful delivery of the project, including a balanced overall budget across all projects.
